Prior to the actual day, children and other key players are involved in a number of activities in schools and communities as part of community sensitization and awareness creation to reach out the larger audience. Since 2006, the ILO community mobilization and participation tool called Supporting Children Rights through Education, Arts and Media (SCREAM) has been used in many communities and schools. This started was initiated by ILO in 200/2005 which fed into a pilot project in 2006 of which ANPPCAN Zambia was given the opportunity to be lead agency together with Zambia Institute of Special Education (ZAMISE) to roll out the methodology with ILO IPs, Ministry of Education decision makers, Principals in schools of higher learning, community child labour committees (CCLCs) among others targets.

With support from World Population Foundation (WPF), ANPPCAN Zambia started its interventions in 2005 in Zambia, targeting three (3) districts in Northern Province, namely Mpika, Chinsali and Kasama. The key component of the project for the first and second year was to create community and district child protection structures and systems that would respond to the needs of children affected by early and forced marriages. The other project component was to raise public awareness and build capacity of duty bearers and children to sustain the structures and institution for effective response to cases of child sexual abuse and other forms of violence against children.
